First Week of Advent: A Holly Jolly Start to A Supple Advent Journey
Welcome to the first Sunday in Advent, a season of warmth, reflection, and the preparation of our hearts and homes. This Advent, we begin our journey not only to bring light into our living spaces but also into ourselves—preparing inwardly as the year draws to a close. This blog post is about making space for meaningful connection and renewal through song, embodying the spirit of Supple Advent Sundays.
This week, let’s explore two beloved carols that bring out the essence of preparation in two unique ways—The Holly and the Ivy and Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. The Holly and the Ivy is filled with symbolism, drawing from the enduring beauty of nature. The evergreen leaves remind us of resilience—life that flourishes even in the stillness of winter. On the other hand, Have a Holly Jolly Christmas encourages us to embrace outward joy and connection, inviting us to share festive warmth with others.
These two songs capture the duality of our journey: inward preparation, stillness, and reflection, as well as outward celebration, connection, and joy.
To honor the diversity of the spiritual journey, you’ll find both traditional and more inclusive versions of the carol texts. Whether you cherish the original lyrics or resonate more with the universal message, these songs and this practice are for all of us, no matter our faith background.
Exercises for Supple Singing:
Two-Fold M Exercise: Inspired by the evergreen spirit of The Holly and the Ivy, this exercise helps open your heart and create a warm space within. Sit comfortably, soften your gaze, and fill your mind with an image of warmth and love in your home. Move between two gentle tones using the 'M' sound, allowing your voice to rock gently back and forth. This practice invites a sense of calmness and readiness.
BamBö Exercise: Adding a playful energy, the BamBö exercise helps us connect with our breath, grounding us while embracing openness. As we prepare for Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, this rhythmic practice encourages joyful, grounded singing, and a feeling of being rooted in ourselves while sharing light outwardly.
Watch and Engage with these Exercises in the video below.
Sing Along and Reflect
Once you’ve warmed up with the exercises, sing along.
I’m excited to share two versions of "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas."
Note on Lyrics:
I understand that for many, the traditional carol lyrics hold deep significance, especially around celebrating Christ. This season, my goal is to honor everyone's unique spiritual journey.
By offering both traditional and universal versions, I hope to ensure no one feels left out—whether you find meaning in the traditional words or connect with a broader, universal spirit of love and warmth.
The Holly and the Ivy
(A New, Universal Text)
The beautiful imagery of the holly and ivy symbolizes resilience, hope, and companionship that transcends faith traditions. Whether you celebrate Christmas, another tradition, or simply honor this time of year, these verses speak to our shared human experience of finding warmth and light during the darkest days.
Have a Holly Jolly Season
(A New, Inclusive Text)
Bringing warmth, kindness, and joy to the holiday season, this adapted version of Have a Holly Jolly Christmas invites us to connect and celebrate with everyone, regardless of our backgrounds.
The Holly and the Ivy - Traditional Text
Verse 1
The holly and the ivy
when they are both full grown
of all the trees that are in the wood
the holly bears the crown
(refrain)
The rising of the sun
and the running of the deer
the playing of the merry organ sweet singing in the choir
Verse 2
The holly bears a blossom
as white as lily flower
and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
to be our sweet Saviour
Verse 3
The holly bears a berry
as red as any blood
and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
to do poor sinners good
Verse 4
The holly bears a prickle
as sharp as any thorn
and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
on Christmas day in the morn
Verse 5
The holly bears a bark
as bitter as any gall
and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas - Traditional Text
Have a holly jolly Christmas.
It's the best time of the year.
I don't know if there'll be snow,
But have a cup of cheer.
Have a holly, jolly Christmas.
And when you walk down the street.
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet
Oh, ho, the mistletoe
Hung where you can see.
Somebody waits for you,
Kiss her once for me.
Have a holly jolly Christmas.
And in case you didn't hear.
Oh, by golly,
Have a holly jolly Christmas this year.
